Rolfing is a holistic approach to wellbeing developed by Dr. Ida Rolf. Its aim and reach are beyond the fascial and structural, recognizing the inseparability of physical and psychological phenomena. If this sounds a little "woo," it's because it is—its philosophy embodies the whole of human experience and the treatment of an individual in their wholeness, including the emotional, energetic, relational, and spiritual. More simply, Rolfing can facilitate change beyond the body.
Rolfing is rooted in anatomical and kinesthetic research: the effect gravity and one's environment have on their form and function. It's also concerned with functional relationships: those within a system (i.e., muscular), the interplay between systems (i.e., muscular and nervous), and the congruency across experiential systems (i.e., somatic and psychological). In learning how systems interact and influence each other we arrive at higher levels of coordination and organization. Most importantly, Rolfing approaches wellbeing through the lens of a researcher: identifying limitations, testing hypotheses, and continuously wondering what's possible.
As Dr. Rolf stated, "You can't get beyond the body unless you free the body itself."
The Ten-Series is a highly intentional, systematic approach to self-discovery and self-organization. Each session is a building block, preparing the client for the sessions that follow, and allowing for progressive breadth and depth over the course of the series. As such, the consistency and sequence of these sessions are important—ideally, completing 10 sessions over the course of 10 weeks. A brief overview of "The Recipe" follows:
Sleeve Series: Sessions I-III
Core Series: Sessions IV-VII
Integration Series: Sessions VIII-X
My primary work is guiding clients through the Ten-Series; however, I also offer tailored sessions to those who have completed it or are interested in targeted treatment.
Sessions are 75-90 minutes total, with approximately 60 minutes of hands-on work. Sessions generally unfold as follows:
Rolfing is not massage therapy; clients are guided through functional assessments and various positions during treatment. As such, they remain partially clothed in comfortable attire. Sheet draping is available upon request and as needed.
Recommended clothing includes:
Rolfing is most effective with direct skin contact. Clients are encouraged to wear clothing that allows access to treatment areas while maintaining comfort.
