RISO (pronounced ree-soh) stands for Research in Self-Organization. "Research" emphasizes the iterative learning process of hypothesizing, intervening, and retesting to make informed decisions. "Self-Organization" is a multidimensional process through which order arises when the relationships between parts within a system interact with improved collaboration and coordination. "Self-Organization" is also used in honor of the individual journey, acknowledging the inner healing intelligence that works behind the scenes doing what's best for each of us. That's a mouthful, I know—that's what the acronym is for.
In working together, we enter a collaborative relationship focused on the discovery and integration of the whole system: an unfolding process of understanding your parts, how they relate, and especially, how they may relate more harmoniously. Our work will weave the physiological and psychological, highlighting their bidirectional relationship while going beyond both.
You may have noticed I've used "process" a handful of times already... it's for good reason. When we're honest with ourselves, we accept that growth and healing are non-linear, and that prioritizing one aspect of our lives often comes with opportunity costs. Rolfing is one modality that can help us orient towards our potential and wholeness, simultaneously and systematically, with benefits ranging far beyond the physical (that is, the functional and structural). My overall goals are for clients to experience congruency and ease across the various dimensions of their lives, feel more curious and integrated, and embody a way of being imbued with empowerment and possibility. And when pain resolves, performance increases, or posture improves, that's icing on the cake!
In my first 30 years, I wore many hats and none of them fit. Perhaps you can relate? I worked in restaurants and retail, served in the USAF, was a personal trainer to tech execs, and even dipped a toe in the tech world myself. In my thirst for meaning and purpose, I felt burnt out and empty-handed.
In 2017, my acupuncturist recommended I try Rolfing for exercise performance and recovery. What I envisioned would be a strictly physical manual therapy turned out to be much more than I expected. My Rolfer was a depth psychologist researching the relationship between psyche and soma, and instilled in me a curiosity about the power of dreams and the intelligence stored within the body. As they say, the rest is history.
It's often in hindsight that we see a clear path hidden to ourselves in the present—an organic unfolding that couldn't have happened any other way. I've unwittingly spent the past six years becoming the Rolfer I first worked with. My hope in working together is that you leave as inspired as I did—even if, like me, you don't realize this until years later.
